A New Milestone for ReefCycle Recycled Plastic Sunglasses

Arise Collective and WWF-Australia celebrate a new milestone to protect the endangered marine life in the northern Great Barrier Reef. Thanks to WWF-Australia’s efforts and donations from the limited-edition Arise Collective X WWF ReefCycle recycled plastic sunglasses, WWF-Australia purchased the last gill net license. This has created a 100,00 km2 safe haven for marine life including dugongs in northern Great Barrier Reef.

With this achievement, the huge gill 90-95% of the far northern Great Barrier Reef is now net free.

While this is monumental to achieve a Net Free North, the fight to protect marine life is far from over. Together, we can continue to envision a better world and make a difference. Let’s take a look at how trendy, ReefCycle sunglasses will protect your eyesight and help marine wildlife.

The danger of commercial gill nets

Gill nets are long scales of fishing nets dropped into the sea. The huge size allows fishermen to capture a large amount of fish. Unfortunately, in addition to fish, endangered species make their way into the nets and aren’t able to escape.

The risks of the commercial gill net make it like a fatal curtain draped across the ocean that threatens sea animals such as dolphins, turtles, dugongs, sawfish and sharks. In addition, plastic waste harms marine life and the Great Barrier Reef, robbing it of its natural beauty.

Recycled sunglasses help protect marine life

In an effort to protect the marine ecosystem, WWF-Australia teamed up with Arise Collective to produce and sell sustainable glasses.

The sunglasses are made from once deadly gill nets that have been removed from the ocean. Once extracted, the material is transformed into eco-friendly recycled plastic sunglasses that help you stay stylish while saving the lives of marine life.

Since Arise Collective donates 50% of the proceeds towards a Net Free North, when you buy a pair of ReefCycle sunglasses you’ll directly support WWF-Australia’s conservation efforts.
