Sorry Melbourne, but Sydney was the place to be last week. Not so much because of the weather (which was a mixed bag), but because of the Australia Fashion Week. For the first time ever the event moved away from Sydney Harbour, instead taking place in the Carriageworks venue centre.

Multiple Australian and Asian-Pacific designers showcased their latest seasonal collections for various retail companies.  The event opened with Sydney-based brand Camilla and Marc, whose tenth anniversary show highlighted a collection that offered an updated take on past accomplishments.

Over the next few days the event moved at a confident clip, with designs from Christopher Esber, Alex Perry, Jayson Brunsdon, Easton Pearson, and Project Runway winner Christina Exie.

The truest example of how Australian fashion has found its voice came at the end.  Major New Zealand brand Zambesi finished the week showing off a quirky collection that clashed with the reserved style of most of the Australian designers.

All in all it seems like the Australia Fashion Week has regained its footing, after a tumultuous 2012 plagued by management issues and criticism of not being in touch with global fashion trends. Asides from the usual complaints about models being too skinny, this edition made it to the end unscathed. The show has come a long way since its troubled beginnings in 1996, when leather and swimsuits were still the primary focus. This year the Australian Fashion Week managed to attract the attention of over 2,000 visitors, from over 77 countries. 66 designers, in different stages of their career, held 52 shows.

This was also the first time the event was live streamed. Missed that stream, and want to relive the Australian fashion week? Have a look on their official YouTube channel or check out the official website.
