With a career spanning over half a century, the late Oscar de la Renta was perhaps the most respected of the fashion world’s elder statesmen. Born in the Dominican Republic, at nineteen Oscar de la Renta moved to Madrid to study art, and made his first major mark on the fashion scene in 1954, when his designs were featured in Vogue magazine for the first time.

Oscar de la Renta then began work at the salon of Cristóbal Balenciaga, Madrid’s most renowned couturier at the time. He continued to build his reputation in the fashion shows and high society soirees in Madrid, and later at Elizabeth Arden in Paris, before finding his way to New York. Oscar de la Renta dresses speak to this worldliness and sophistication, mixing the vibrant and sensual Latin influences of his homeland with the refinement of the Parisian and New York high fashion scenes where he made his name.

Little wonder then, that for any actress looking to wow the audience at awards night, any First Lady needing to get the tone just right at a major international gala, or any celebrity wanting to look flawless on their wedding day, Oscar de la Renta was the most trusted pair of hands in fashion. For half a century Oscar de la Renta dresses were seen on anyone who was anyone in the cultural and political elite. Movie stars such as Penelope Cruz, Lupita Nyongo and Sarah Jessica Parker along with every First Lady from Jacky Kennedy up to and including Michelle Obama, have all been seen looking their best in Oscar de la Renta dresses. One of his final, and most popular creations, was the stunning ivory wedding dress Amal Alamuddin wore at her wedding to George Clooney in Venice last year.
