Christian Dior 2020 Cruise Collection

On Monday evening, Maria Grazia Chiuri presented her Cruise 2020 collection for the House of Dior and our jaws are flat on the floor! Set against the backdrop of a stunning Moroccan night, the show took place at the Palais El Badi, Marrakech. Guests were seated among the fortress’ terracotta colonnades as models walked around the courtyard’s glorious pool, filled with hundreds of floating torches like something out of a colloquial fairy tale!

With a front seat view, Vogue was able to capture some of the best looks of the show and we just couldn’t help but match our favorite Dior frames to the intricate ensembles!

We loved the tie-dye inspiration of traditional African hand-looms that Grazia referenced throughout the collection and immediately thought of the tortoiseshell patterned frames as the perfect accompaniment. The Blue Tortoise WILDLY DIOR is almost an extension of this African Wax print gown, though we like the Purple version for a clash of color.

This next look was developed in consultation with Anthropologist, Anne Grosfilley, who commented on the collection saying, “Maria Grazia’s point of view was to promote one-hundred percent African-made textile but not to make ‘an African style’. This collection can be worn by anyone because it’s about the connection between all the continents in the world.” We think these sharp-cut DIOR MIRRORED sunglasses best reflect the detail of the printed fabric.

With the intent of developing a “world map”, Maria Grazia drew in the talent of multiple collaborators to shape the collection, from British-Jamaican designer Grace Wales Bonner and African-American artist Mickalene Thomas to renowned South-African shirt-maker Pathé’O. To lend the decor an authentically traditional design, Chiuri brought in Moroccan craftswomen Sumano on the show’s scenography which featured local pottery and textiles.

Ending the night in a sweeping vision of white, was the most iconic tribute solidifying Dior’s historic ties with Marrakech. In 1951, Christian Dior created the ‘Maroc’, a white tulle dress and coat, inspired by the heat of the region combated by the cooling colors of the city. Later on in 1960 when Yves Saint Laurent served as Creative Director of the house, he designed  the ivory ‘Marrakech’ coat in honor of his late mentor.
